South Dakota's 2013 Push for Gold and Silver as Legal Tender

South Dakota's House Bill 1100, introduced in 2013, aimed to authorize the use of specific gold and silver coins as legal tender in the state. The bill sought to recognize these precious metals for everyday transactions, offering a constitutional alternative to the Federal Reserve currency. While it gained attention, it was ultimately deferred and did not progress through the legislature. Had it passed, South Dakota would have joined a select group of states pursuing the integration of gold and silver into their financial systems.
