Mississippi's Constitutional Currency Bills Stalled
Mississippi took a key step in April 2023 by adopting SB 2862, fully exempting sales tax on gold, silver, platinum, and palladium bullion, making it officially more viable for transactional use. In the 2025 session, two bills aimed at elevating gold and silver to legal tender status (HB 394 and HB 545) were introduced. Both outlined provisions for specie to be recognized as legal tender without mandating its acceptance and proposed a July 1, 2025, effective date. However, HB 394 stalled in committee, and HB 545 died before further action.
While Mississippi doesn’t currently have an active legal tender bill, the sales tax exemption and past proposals show ongoing momentum in aligning with the Constitutional Currency movement.
Stay tuned, future legislative sessions could see renewed efforts to push Mississippi into the legal tender fold.
