Alabama's Legal Tender Act
On February 19, 2025, the Alabama Legislature introduced Senate Bill 130, known as the Alabama Legal Tender Act, aiming to recognize refined gold and silver bullion and certain coins as legal tender within the state. The bill proposes that any refined gold or silver bullion stamped with its weight and purity would be accepted as valid payment, while ensuring that acceptance remains voluntary and individuals cannot be compelled to accept these forms of payment. This legislation provides residents with an alternative to fiat currency, offering a hedge against inflation and economic instability. By allowing gold and silver to be used in transactions, the bill promotes financial security and monetary freedom, giving individuals more options to preserve their wealth. Additionally, the law helps align Alabama with constitutional principles, reinforcing the right of states to establish sound money policies.
